New Barn Scouts get lost... on purpose!
On Sunday 25 March Scouts from 1st New Barn, Longfield Hill got lost but it was for a very good reason. The Young people aged from ten and a half to fourteen, some of which had recently won a Kent Scout Hike were assisting the Lowland Search Dog Kent team in a training exercise.
The Scouts, who are taking part in the Kent Search and Rescue Challenge, were joined by Guides from Gravesend Senior Section and they were shown how the Dogs are trained, how the search team works and how this volunteer team assist the police in searching for missing persons or Mispers as they are known. They are on call 365 days a year and last year went out on over 56 searches in Kent and surrounding counties.
The practical demonstration was the highlight of the day, where Scouts and Guides took turns to be the Misper and part of the search team. 1st New Barn Scout Leader, Glyn Williams said “ The dogs and the search team are fantastic, it’s the first time I have not been worried that my Scouts may be lost”. The day ended with sausages cooked on a fire in true Scout style.
